You Say… Lady Gaga
January 18, 2010
There is no doubt that her music is catchy (even those who claim not to like it are often caught singing along) but her fashion choices are just as much, if not more, the reason she is such a media highlight.

While she seems to be a favorite among top fashion designers, she is also a favorite among bloggers and there are polar-opposite reactions to her unique sense of style. So, I want to know what you really think of Lady Gaga’s style.

Is Gaga a true style muse or is she a hot mess seeking exposure via fashion… you say?

To be honest I’m not entirely sure she HAS a sense of style. I think she dresses like that as part of her persona and because it grabs attention for her “brand”
It also means she can walk down the street and no one will recognise her!
I’ve liked a few elements of her looks, but sometimes she just looks insane, but I think it acheives it’s required aims!
Okay – get ready for this –
You know what, I think this is all branding. I watched her on Oprah and apparently the message Oprah came away with was “Be Yourself”. Well – I wonder. On Oprah, Ga Ga looked pretty and while still over the top by many standards, for her usual style, she was understated – and she looked great. I think that her music and image are caught up in the same thing – sales. I am not being cynical, it is just a fact.
Now, I have undergone some changes. Through my life I have done grunge, gothic, tom boy and now I kind of aim towards a type of feminine chic (bolstered by occasional rock chick and grunge throwback tones) and I have no doubt that Ga Ga is playing with image, her own as a person – but mostly, in public, her image as a performer. Just like Madonna, Christina, Cher. I mean, all those women have done edgy/sexy/overt/flamboyant/ridiculous.
Now, I am not a Ga Ga fan, I actually had to look her up on You Tube just now to verify what she sings (seriously), but I know who she is and what she looks like. That is successful branding.
Good on her.
x.
Style Muse. This interesting and totally unique and over the top look is What a pop star should look like. Or do you think a pop star should look like Britney?
I don’t know her music at all as I mainly listen to indie alternative stuff , and I’ve never even see a video of her – but I sure know who she is too! I love that she pushes the boundaries and has fun with fashion.
In a sea of bland blonde pop-ettes she stands out, and that has to encourage individuality. It’ll be interesting to see how her style changes in the future.
I like Lady Gaga! I think what she wears is a great extension of what she’s doing, who she wants to be and where she wants to go. Not saying she’s a style muse (I like wearing pants haha) but she actually treats every day as a runway show.
I read in an interview once that she had her heart broken by yet another guy, and decided to just stop that crap and pour all her time and energy and heart (and money) into this other route, this love she has for performing and outlandish creation. Beyond the I-love-your-love desires and overt sexuality, she’s still a sad little girl with a (hopefully now mended) broken heart who’s taken back herself. I think it’s empowering in the fact that she’s not pretending that a bf will fulfill her; she can fulfill herself just fine, thank you.
I’m not sure she has a ‘style’, other than shameless self-promotion. That said, she’s enormously fun – there really isn’t any other star who would wear the stuff that she wears and that’s why designers love her so much. We all want to create outlandish things, and are always bogged down by ‘marketability’ and ‘wearability’. Gaga totally eschews those nasty words and allows designers to see their most ambitious designs actually being worn somewhere outside a catwalk or editorial. And for that, I can help but love her.
I love Gaga. I’m not even necessarily a huge fan of her music (it is indeed catchy as hell, though!), but I just love that she doesn’t give a flying f- about looking normal or trendy or whatever – she just wears whatever the hell she wants or whatever will get the most outlandish reactions!
Branded or not – she is pushing fashion forward which is exciting to see.
I especially love the nude rubber skirt.. Wonder how long it took to put on and take off…
I love Lady Gaga… I think she is an artist not only in music but in style and fashion too…
Yes, no one will really be seen wearing any of the pics above but all her outfits have meaning behind them and she is doing what she loves to do. She is expressing fashion in her eyes…
LOVE HER.
She likes gay people. That’s good enough for me.
Even if we don’t like what she wears she’s a style muse. Whether you’re inspired or not, either way we’re provoked to talk about what style and fashion are. I really think the conversations she is stimulating is partly forming fashion in the 21st century. I don’t want to over-estimate her influence, but I do think she is an important figure in the fashion world, love her or hate her.
I personally, love it. Some of her stuff I think it awful and yeah, is probably just for attention – but if I were a superstar who could get away with wearing outrageous fashion, I definitely would. It would be a ridiculous amount of fun!
Plus, it’s nice to see someone actually wearing the more avant-garde designs of top designers.
I love Lady Gaga. She is what pop music needs right now. She is fresh and thought provoking (especially her videos).
There is a very good chance that when she is at home writing music or having a drink by herself that she is chillin’ with her Lululemons and a hoodie just like everyone else.
So, yes, Lady Gaga is without a doubt…a brand and she is doing everything she can to make sure people know it.
When she tried to market herself at Stefani (Germanotta)….a sort of Tori Amos-type of style and music, didn’t really launch her career. So, she adapted to what people really wanted and made herself stand out.
She is amazing and I am incredibly excited about her next video and album (not that she has time for either right now).
Love her or hate her, she is definitely here to stay….and evolve.
