Recycled Style Project: A New Friendship Bracelet
June 17, 2011

Friendship bracelets are making a comeback (and not just among pre-teens). There are many different versions available at a variety of price points, but isn’t the original charm of friendship bracelets to get inspired by your BFF and create something special for them with your own hands?

Okay, most of us don’t have the same kind of idle time as we did when we were younger, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find a small slice of time for a little creative gift making. Try your hand at this sophisticated version of the classic friendship bracelet inspired by designer bangles from the runway. It is simple enough for even clumsier hands and quick enough to do in an evening.

All you need are a couple of bangles and embroidery threads. Start by choosing a vibrant colour palette, tie the ends of together and secure with a double knot around the bangle. Start with one colour and wrap it around the bangle making sure to trap the threads-in-waiting on the inside of the wrap. To change hues, tie a small single knot on the inside, switch threads and keep wrapping. To finish, simply tie a secure double knot on the inside rim and trim off any excess thread tails.

Want to make the classic version? Homemade Gifts gives you a helpful how-to.
Are your buddies rockers, tomboys or bad boys? Try making Maegan’s cool leather version.
Caught the camp craft bug and want more? Make Refinery 29’s necklace (it’s next on my list).

Remember, the most important rule of the tradition is to give your hand-crafted friendship bracelets away to all your favorite people to tell them how much you adore having them in your world!

I’m literally making one out of thread and washers right now!
Love the inspiration, I need to try the bangle-wrapping technique
